Does JavaFX have a future at Oracle? 0

One big issue: JavaFX isn’t open source, so the community can’t just take it over if Oracle decides to abandon it.

Beta software that isn’t a drag 0

What’s interesting about this picture of the JavaFX Flickr photo app ? Ya, its been dragged out of the web page. No big deal, but previously only possible on Windows.

What’s interesting about it is was dragged it out of Safari 4 beta on the Planetarium’s resident Mac ! No dual boot/virtualization tricks, honest.

James Ward on Flex, AIR and Java 0

I recently had a conversation with James Ward,Technical Evangalist for Flex at Adobe. We started by discussing what Flex and AIR are, and the differences between them, before moving onto Flex’s integration with Java, the competing technologies (JavaFX and SilverLight), the use of Flex in the next generation of Eclipse, and what James would use for development if I took Flex away.

E-BOOKS ON JAVA 0

Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D, just to name a few. It’s also integral to the intranet applications and other e-business solutions that are the foundation of corporate computing. Reserve your Preferred JavaOne 2009 JavaFX Sessions 0

Just a heads up that you can now reserve the JavaFX (and other) sessions that you want for JavaOne 2009. As it says on the JavaOne 2009 Sessions web page:

“In order to get into the sessions that matter to you most, you must use Schedule Builder to pre-enroll and ensure you get into your preferred sessions. Sessions fill up fast, so don’t delay.”

JavaFX – Always On Top 0

Stage is the top level container in JavaFX. It provides attributes such as fullScreen, iconified, opacity, style, icons, resizable, title which loosely maps to corresponding methods in java.awt.Frame.

But it doesn’t provide any functionality to create Dialog behavior (modal, no task bar icon etc) and also support for setAlwaysOnTop. These two features are required to get the actual Widget feel. As of now the Stage shows a taskbar icon for each application.

Reserve your Preferred JavaOne 2009 JavaFX Sessions 0

JavaOne2009 Just a heads up that you can now reserve the JavaFX (and other) sessions that you want for JavaOne 2009.  As it says on the JavaOne 2009 Sessions web page:

“In order to get into the sessions that matter to you most, you must use Schedule Builder to pre-enroll and ensure you get into your preferred sessions. Sessions fill up fast, so don’t delay.”

Of course, Stephen Chin and I would like to welcome you to reserve our Pro JavaFX™ Platform: RIA Enterprise Application Development with JavaFX Technology session.  As an extra incentive, all four of the Pro JavaFX book authors plan to be at the session (Stephen and I will be presenting, and we’ll call on Weiqi Gao and Dean Iverson to field the tougher questions).

On a related note, I’ll be teaching a half-day JavaOne University session on JavaFX entitled:

Developing Secure, Interactive Applications Hosted on a Variety of Clients Using JavaFX Technology

As a special treat, Weiqi Gao, Stephen Chin and Dean Iverson each plan to teach part of the session, focusing on areas that they’ve written about in our Pro JavaFX book.

For your convenience, here is a list of the JavaFX-related sessions with hyperlinks to their details:
